Background
Established in 2007, Sound Beginnings is a new program that has received start-up funds from a private foundation to enhance the services in northern Utah. Sound Beginnings is committed to supporting the auditory learning of every child receiving services. The early intervention program and preschool will strive to meet each child’s specific needs by developing or enhancing their listening and spoken language. Goals for their communication development will be incorporated in daily routines, including the child’s home and community activities. The long-term goal is for each child to be fully mainstreamed with their typical hearing peers in their neighborhood school.
The mission of Sound Beginnings of Cache Valley is to:
- Respect, honor, and support children with hearing loss and their families
- Work in partnership with families, recognizing that families are the child’s first teacher
- Educate families on a variety of service options available for their child
- Help families access resources from the local and larger community appropriate for their specific needs
- Provide individualized, developmentally appropriate auditory/oral programming that enables each child to maximize his or her overall potential (cognitive, physical, social, hearing, and speech-language)
- Partner with family members, respecting the family’s strengths, traditions, and cultural values
- Prepare future leaders in the auditory/oral approach through state-of-the-art, evidence-based teaching, research, continuing education, and training
Sound Beginnings is located on the campus of Utah State University, Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Department, Logan, UT
